Our Valentine’s blog series gets under the skin of life at Mr B & Friends, and asks different members of our team why they love working here. We’ve talked ‘young love’, with our curious and passionate, interns. We’ve talked ‘friends with benefits’ – from hot and steamy team workouts, to office fresh fruitiness and our mind, body and soul employee engagement programme. And now we’re staring deep into the eyes of our most esteemed colleagues and asking why they’ve stuck around after all these years.
It’s gonna be emosh…
Let’s talk ‘long-term relationships’.
Start off with a bang…
We all know how it starts. Jitters. Excitement. Scrubbing up for the first meeting. Always looking your best. Not wanting to show your worst side. Wanting to impress, learning how each other ticks. Both making an effort. Nothing’s too much trouble… you slowly start moving your personal items into the drawers, leaving a change of clothes, your personalised mug, feeling at home…
That’s when it happens.
You get comfortable. From our ‘save the date’ nights, to sometimes working late nights, to eating pizza without plates nights, next level relationship – we don’t hesitate to speak up, share bugbears, bear hugs, keep each other on our toes, feet under the table – you know. We work hard but all muck in. We trust each other to get the job done. We laugh. A lot. So yeah, getting comfortable’s a pretty good thing in our eyes.
Keep it fresh
That said, we want to sustain that hunger and passion, even when you’ve been here a while. We’ve evolved over the years. Kept it fresh – in order to keep everyone fresh. No such thing as stagnating… we’re always asking, “where next?” and “what do you desire?” From our culture to career progression opportunities, we give you room to grow.
Sheena, our Design Director, has been with us for 8 years. She joined us as a Junior and has worked her way up through the ranks, to become one of our top dogs. Here’s what she has to say about why she’s stuck by our side:
“Summed up in a few words:
Loyalty, hard work, passion for what we do, variety, change and never standing still.”
“Since joining as a Junior Designer with a few years experience under my belt back in 2009, I worked myself up to Design Director in 2015. Working in a small team and working closely with Steve and Simon in the early days gave me the mentoring, knowledge, experience and most importantly the opportunity to flourish.”
Stick together through ‘thick and thin’
“On a personal note knowing how everyone likes their brew, yes that perfect ‘thick’ tea for Si. Or understanding the kiwi lingo (which took a little while to adjust to) – until setting up a ‘preso’ and changing the ‘op-A-city’ just became second nature. All these skills and experience I’ve picked up along the years, mixed together with hard work and loyalty has got me where I am today.”
“What I love about life at Mr B is its ever evolving nature from the type of clients and range of work we do and the super talented people we meet along the way. For me, being at Mr B is like a family (albeit an extended one now) working alongside people that are really passionate about what they do, learning off each other and growing together. What’s important is that we always have time for each other whether it’s a quick cuppa catching up with Steve or mentoring junior members to plug in knowledge gaps.”
“Lastly, never standing still. It’s what keeps this place fresh, fun and exciting – it’s not just about the 2 office moves but the evolving ambition of the agency, from creating positive change to “where next” to “what you desire?” I’ve been lucky enough to be part of the Mr B story for 8 years now and I’d say to all you newbies out there: get ready for fun, laughter, hard work and awesome rewarding projects along the way.”
Feel at home
Our Creative Director, Kate, has helped to grow our creative team substantially over the years:
“I rocked up in the South West from London four years ago, fully intending to stay a self-employed designer. However, after 4 months I realised the only people I knew in Bristol were other daily dog walkers – and they only knew me as ‘Dylan the dog’s Mum’. I needed to meet people.”
“A quick job search turned up ‘Mr B & Friends’, which sounded like just the sort of place to feel at home. I accepted Steve’s proposal of the role of Design Director two hours after we met, clearly love at first sight for both of us…”
“I’m now celebrating my four year anniversary and what a whirl it has been – seeing the agency grow from 16 to 42 people, a promotion to Creative Director, a house purchase, a new home for Mr B & Friends in Bristol, recruiting about 20 creatives over the years, joining the SMT, joining the Board of Bristol Media, filming the Welsh Rugby Team for our client Principality, sending plasterboard into space for our client Siniat, being part of a place with huge energy, friendship and ambition.”
