Like most companies, we have regular social events where we all go out and get a little merry together. We are, after all, fairly partial to the odd tipple every now and again… But aside from the usual drinking shenanigans, we also have GFAW – Get Fit At Work.
As a creative agency, we all work really hard within a very pressured and stressful industry, quite often working through lunch breaks and late into the evening. At Mr B & Friends, both the camaraderie and the welfare of the team are really important to the agency; GFAW is one of the ways that we ensure we have a fit, happy, healthy and united team.
To the average Joe, the thought of a regular fitness regime may not sound too appealing but to the ‘Sportaholic’ (yes, I am one of those annoying people), this may just about be the ultimate perk! But the best thing about GFAW is that it doesn’t matter how fit you are, what your age is or even what your position is within the agency – we are all equal here! We are united as one, stripped bare of any labels.
We ‘guffaw’ (as it has been lovingly rebranded) on Monday and Thursday evenings. Excitement for the gruelling sessions start in the morning when we receive our motivational email from the head honcho at Get Fit in Bath, David Bowler. His words whip the team up into a frenzy and before we know it, we have around 12 Mr Ber’s ready to go for it.
The run from Mr B Towers to the GFIB gym is about a mile. It’s the perfect warm up for what lies ahead. Every single session is different: cardio, running (hate the hill sprints!), HIIT, resistance work, weights and fun games at the Rec. What is consistent is the quality of the session, the motivation from Dave, Ed and Tash and of course the enjoyment that we as a team experience. Hard work, yes. But enjoyable and a buzz every time.
When we’re done, the feeling is brilliant. We’ve all worked hard together, united in a single goal, and created a bond that you just can’t get down the pub. And it doesn’t stop there. The next day we swap war stories of pain, laugh at the intensity of the sessions and look forward to the next.
To the outside world, GFAW might just be some ‘after-work sport’, but to us Mr B’ers, it builds on our already strong relationships, it strengthens us as a team, it creates a productive, positive and upbeat atmosphere within the agency and it gives us an outlet after a hard day’s work. Our confidence, respect and trust in each other has never been higher.
