We all experience several ‘firsts’ in life: Your first steps. First hangover. First Five Jobs. Our Digital Marketing Manager, Louise, holds the talking stick today and tells us of her lessons learned before she became a digital marketing guru, including how she landed her first brief stint in being a Dog Whisperer. Yes we’re being SEO-rious (pun most definitely intended)!
1. Dog Kennel Assistant
This was my first paid job. Well, if £1.50 an hour qualifies as ‘paid’ work! I was 13 at the time and lived in the remote countryside, so I was trying to keep myself busy. After a few weeks of walking dogs, I quickly realised I would rather be indoors. Although bored, I’d much rather be in the warm rather than outside in the freezing cold and torrential rain.
LESSON: Only do outdoor work if you’re an outdoorsy person… I for one am not one of those people.
At the age of 15, I was waitressing at the local village pub for a couple of months. Every Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, I spent my time serving the local villagers and fake laughing at their jokes! However, spending Saturday night in with my friends at the age of 15 was a much more appealing offer!
LESSON: Perfecting the art of fake laughing will get you far… for a little while anyway!
At 18, during my university days, I would serve pints at the local pub. This involved serving the regulars of the bar and was my longest serving job of 6 months. The hot barmen had a little to do with me sticking this out. Or, a lot.
LESSON: You gain a lot of experience even in the smallest jobs but it’s okay to have higher ambitions and want to strive for more.
4. Digital Marketing Intern
This was my first proper job out of uni. I knew, from my degree, that I wanted to be in digital marketing. So I landed an internship with a local digital marketing agency for 2 months. Again, I say ‘agency’ but there were a total of 2 employees.
LESSON: It’s important that you fit the culture of your workplace and that the culture works well with your personality. Sometimes, this doesn’t always work out.
5. Digital Marketing Assistant
This was my second ‘real’ job out of university and I absolutely loved it! I was a digital marketing assistant for an online triathlon store. I got to cover all aspects of digital marketing, including SEO, PPC, social media, content marketing – the lot! It was from this job that I realised that this is what I wanted to be doing in my career. From here I went on to another agency and really got stuck into the digital marketing world!
LESSON: When you find a job that you find exciting and it makes you happy – this is the right job for you!
Where next for Louise?
