As the academic year comes to an end, we’re starting to say farewell to some of our interns as they head onto the next part their journey – starting their final year of university. We were curious to hear their thoughts from their year out in agency life!

We quizzed Ceri, our Client Services & Operations Intern about her time with us, to paint a real picture about intern life. Ceri joined us from the University of Bournemouth, for a year’s placement in industry, as part of her BSc Marketing studies.

Here she shares invaluable lessons learnt, her highlights and challenges, as well as why the internship helped her to determine her future career path.

Adjusting to the 9–5

‘Mr B & Friends is the first agency I have ever worked in. Adjusting to the 9–5 office life was a huge change from 2 years of university life, but the team were really welcoming from the get-go. On my very first day, I attended an agency social – it was a great way to meet the team and I was introduced to the work hard, play hard culture of Mr B’s.’

Not a one trick pony

‘My internship was pretty rounded and spanned across two teams within the agency. I spent the first 11 months of my placement in the Client Services department supporting Had’s team with various client accounts. I got to grips with daily account management of point of sale devices and print brochures, and later gained confidence in integrated campaigns.’

‘Towards the end of my internship I was based in the Operations department, where I took on the role of receptionist. This role saw me learn the art of organisation, through arranging big-scale agency events such as the Away Day & BBQ – (fond memories of that unforgettable rum punch!) – and helping to keep the agency ticking over on a day-to-day basis, from arranging meetings and taking new business enquiries. It wasn’t an easy task! But when events came together it was really rewarding.’

‘I also got involved with internal marketing activity and helped to create the intern newsletter, which was fun to work on.’

The full-monty – exposure to agency life

‘During my time at Mr B’s I have been fortunate to explore all aspects of the agency from digital marketing to strategy and planning. This vast level of exposure and the ‘ask questions’ attitude of the agency really has formed the foundation for my future career. I’m keen to look into roles within strategy when I graduate.’

Words of wisdom

‘My advice to a future intern would be to never say no. Never say no to that job or being involved in that meeting. In true Mr B style, saying yes, asking questions and challenging really does get you to achieve ‘where next’ – our mantra for future-focused thinking. Saying yes got me involved in internal marketing – which was a chance to be super creative with ideas…’

‘A social post I will never forget at Mr B Towers was the mannequin challenge reflecting our daily office life. From hugging plants to intern pyramids, it was all in the name of fun and it went down a storm!’

An unforgettable year

‘An experience which will stay with me is when I assisted with student screening events for Amazon Student. I was able to be hands-on with the branding, managing brand positioning and guest lists, and working closely with brand ambassadors. It was experiences like that which made my placement year so exciting and an experience that I will not forget.’

‘I’ve been able to learn many new skills which I’ll take with me going forwards, and have met some really great people during my time here. I’ve also mastered the perfect cup of coffee, which will be a crowd-pleaser for years to come (never underestimate the power of coffee in an office!)’

We wish Ceri all the best for her final year at uni thanks for all of your hard work this year!
